Men’s Basketball opens the 2022-23 season Monday at UCF

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team opens the 2022-23 season on Monday when it travels to Orlando, Florida to take on UCF. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Knights is set for 8 p.m. on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville picked up a 101-47 victory over Milligan last Tuesday in an exhibition game at Kimmel Arena. Five different Bulldogs finished the night in double figures and multiple new Bulldogs had stellar outings in debut games in an Asheville uniform.
More on the Milligan Game – Senior Amadou Sylla led all scorers in his first game as a Bulldog on Tuesday with 23 points on an efficient 8-for-9 effort from the field. Fellow newcomers Nick McMullen (14 points, seven rebounds) and Caleb Burgess (six points, seven assists) showed well in their debuts in an Asheville uniform. Gabrelcik finished the night with 14 points, while regular starters Tajion Jones (13 points) and Drew Pember (10 points) scored in double figures in limited action.
Preseason Predictions – Asheville was predicted to finish third in the annual Big South Preseason Men's Basketball Poll. Additionally, Pember headlined the All-Big South First Team by being named the Big South's Preseason Player of the Year. Tajion Jones also earned All-Big South honors by being placed on the Second Team.
Nearing History – Jones is nearing some historic accomplishments as he begins his sixth season in a Bulldog uniform. With two more points, Jones will move into 10th on Asheville's all-time scoring list with 1,468 points. Furthermore, Jones needs to make just 36 more 3-pointers to be the program's all-time leader in that category.
About UCF – Like the Bulldogs, UCF will open the 2022-23 season on Monday. The Knights posted an overall record of 18-12 and 9-9 in league play a season ago. UCF was projected to finish sixth in the 2022-23 American Athletic Conference's Preseason Poll late last month.
Series Rewind vs. the Knights – Asheville and UCF have met once previously with matchup occurring way back in 1990. In that contest, which was played on December 18, the Knights came away with the 91-76 victory in Orlando.
