11.02.2022 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville men's soccer fell to USC Upstate in their regular season finale by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday (Nov. 2).
"We are extremely proud of our boys for the way they played and battled tonight," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Mick Giordano. "That is a well-coached Upstate team but one of the best coaches in our conference. We made just one small mistake in the first half and with a team of that level, they punished us. Our reactions were terrific and we really deserved more. To the seniors, we just want to thank you for everything you have done for our program and UNC Asheville."
The teams spent the first 33 minutes feeling each other out, before a ball got played into the box off a scramble. The Spartans would strike first in the 34th minute, when Brody Williams put home his fourth of the season through the scramble to put USC Upstate up 1-0. The Spartans would eventually take their lead to the half.
The Spartans would increase their lead in the 65th minute when Alvaro Martin scored his first of the season off a ball played through a crowd by Felipe Marty. The Bulldogs would get on the board four minutes later when Conor Behan scored his third of the season unassisted. The ball was initially mishandled by Spartan keeper Luca Bulfon, when Behan seized the moment and stashed home the bobble.
The Bulldogs made a valiant run in the last 20 minutes but were unable to find the equalizer. UNC Asheville out-shot USC Upstate 20-16 in the match, led by five shots from Sam Presser. Behan tallied three shots in the contest, while Brendan Herb, Stewart Patnaud and Mason Cookus each registered two. Heath Flathau, Dominic Miller, Sam Pitts-Eckersalll, Aidan Whitlock, Jake Kemhadjian and Sammy Kilimann each also posted one shot in the match. Ian McGill made seven saves between the pipes for UNC Asheville.
