Drew Pember Earns Henson & Big South Player of the Week Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. / BOSTON, Mass. – Thanks to a strong start to the 2022-23 campaign, UNC Asheville's Drew Pember earned a pair of accolades on Monday. First, Pember was named the Lou Henson National Player of the Week by Collegeinsider.com, and he was also named the Co-Big South Men's Basketball Player of the Week by the league office.
The Lou Henson National Player of the Week award is awarded to the top mid-major player from last week's games. The last Bulldog to earn this honor was J.P. Primm in 2012. As for the accolade from the Big South, it marks the fourth time that Pember has earned this weekly honor from the Big South.
Pember, the Preseason Big South Player of the Year, opened the 2022-23 season strongly last week. The Knoxville, Tennessee native scored 40 points to go along with nine rebounds to help fuel Asheville's thrilling double overtime win over UCF on Monday, 98-95. Pember, who is just the third Big South player to score 40 points in a season opener, finished the week averaging 23.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 55.6 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from 3-point range. Thanks to his play and the rest of the Bulldogs, Asheville is 2-0 for the first time since 2008.
Pember and the rest of the Bulldogs will be back in action Friday when they begin play at the three-day Capitol Classic multi-team event in Atlanta, Georgia. Asheville will kick off the event on Friday evening when it takes on Texas A&M Commerce at 8:30 p.m.
