ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Five different UNC Asheville men's basketball players scored in double figures to help fuel Asheville's 101-47 victory over Milligan on Tuesday night at Kimmel Arena in an exhibition contest.

"I thought we had a good turnout with a bunch of students coming out, which was great to see," said UNC Asheville Head Coach Mike Morrell afterward. "I think that definitely helped us get off to a good start. It's great to have that energy in the building. It was a lot of fun and we are very appreciative of the fans that came out tonight."

Asheville jumped on Milligan right from the opening tip-off. The Bulldogs scored the first 11 points of the game to put the Buffaloes in an early hole. Even with the early lead, Asheville kept the pressure on and the efficient offense rolling through the first 20 minutes. Collectively, the Bulldogs shot 61.3 percent from the field in the first half, outscored the Buffaloes 30-4 in the paint, and totaled 11 assists on 19 made field goals. Asheville at one point put together a 15-0 run to grow its lead to 44 points in the waning minutes of the first half.

When the game resumed for the second half, the Bulldogs kept finding the bottom of the net to grow their lead even further. Dean Gabrelcik led the way for Asheville in the second half knocking down a trio of 3-pointers and scored 11 points over the final 20 minutes. One of the made threes by Gabrelcik put Asheville up by 60, its largest lead of the game, 97-37. After that point, both teams knocked down some shots before the final buzzer sounded and Asheville finished off the 101-47 victory.

Senior Amadou Sylla led all scorers in his first game as a Bulldog with 23 points on an efficient 8-for-9 effort from the field. Fellow newcomers Nick McMullen (14 points, seven rebounds) and Caleb Burgess (six points, seven assists) showed well in their debuts in an Asheville uniform. Gabrelcik finished the night with 14 points, while regular starters Tajion Jones (13 points) and Drew Pember (10 points) scored in double figures in limited action.

The Bulldogs will officially open the 2022-23 season next Monday when they visit UCF. Tip-off for that game is set for 8 p.m. on ESPN+.
