10.28.2022 | Cross Country
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville cross country teams will make the trip to Farmville, Virginia for the 2022 Big South Cross Country Championships on Saturday. The women's 5K race will begin the day at 10:30 a.m. with the men's 8K race to follow at 11:30 a.m.
Last Time Out – Asheville closed out its regular season on a high note at the USC Upstate Invitational back on October 15. The Bulldog men's team finished second, while the women's squad placed sixth.
Another Runner of the Week – Junior Adam Hessler led the way for the Bulldogs at Upstate as he won the men's race with a time of 24:38.3. For his efforts, Hessler was named the Big South's Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week. It marks the second time this fall that Hessler has earned this honor.
Championships Past – Both the men's and women's teams hope to improve upon last year's performances at the Big South Championships. In 2021, the men's team finished third, while the women placed fourth. Overall, the Bulldogs have won four Big South championships (all women) in their history with the last coming in 1999.
All-Conference picks for Asheville – The Bulldogs will have the benefit of having a pair of former All-Big South runners competing on Saturday. Both Hessler (spring 2021) and John Ciprich (fall 2021) have earned All-League accolades in their Bulldog careers. To earn All-Big South honors this fall, runners need to finish in the top 14 with the top seven recognized as the First Team and the final seven making up the Second Team.
