SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Asheville cross country teams posted another strong showing to close out their regular seasons at Saturday's USC Upstate Invitational. The men's team finished second, while the women's squad placed sixth. Furthermore, Adam Hessler won the men's 8K race with a time of 24:38.3.
The day began with the women's 5K race. As mentioned earlier, Asheville's women's team finished sixth. With their sixth-place finish, the Bulldogs finished ahead of fellow Big South schools Longwood, Gardner-Webb, USC Upstate, and Winthrop on the day.
Emma Kennett led the way for Asheville on Saturday finishing 14th with a time of 18:57.2. Fellow Bulldogs Sophie Lundin (33rd – 19:30.2), Madeline Wittschen (42nd – 19:54.2), Amelie Simmes (50th – 20:14.9), Alyx Beausoleil (53rd – 20:20.9), and Ava Nkadi (81st – 21:29.2) all secured new career-best 5K times on Saturday as well.
Hessler's victory, meanwhile, in the men's 8K race was his second individual victory as a Bulldog as he also won the Highlander Invitational in February 2021. Not too far behind Hessler was fellow Bulldog John Ciprich, who placed third in the field with a time of 24:59.4.
The depth of the Bulldogs was also valuable on their way to a second-place finish as they had eight runners rank in the top 35 that finished Saturday's race.
Asheville will be back in action on October 29 when it competes at the Big South Cross Country Championships in Farmville, Virginia.
