ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will return to the court on Saturday when it visits longtime rival Winthrop. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Eagles is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville dropped a 75-68 contest to North Carolina A&T last Tuesday at Kimmel Arena. The loss moved the Bulldogs' record to 7-12 overall and 2-6 in conference action.
Dynamic Duo – Asheville has one of the most dynamic scoring duos in the Big South on its roster. Nadiria Evans (18.7 PPG) and Kai Carter (17.5 PPG) rank third and fifth in the league, respectively, in terms of scoring average vs. Big South competition so far this season. Asheville is the only team with two players that rank in the top five in that category.
Nadiria Nears Free Throw Record – Earlier this week, Evans broke the school record for career free throw attempts (655). Next up for Evans is the free throws made record, which she needs just seven more to break that mark held by Vicki Giffin (448 – 1993-97). Furthermore, Evans will become just the fifth Bulldog ever to reach the 1,600-point mark in their career by netting just four more points.
Back-to-Back Road Wins – Asheville will aim to win back-to-back road games for the second time this season when it visits Rock Hill on Saturday. The Bulldogs, who knocked off Charleston Southern by a score of 59-47 back on January 16, downed Wofford (70-64) and East Tennessee State (66-56) for back-to-back wins away from Asheville earlier this season.
About Winthrop – Winthrop enters Saturday's game vs. Asheville sporting a record of 2-15 overall and 0-6 in Big South action. The Eagles are led by the duo of J'Mani Ingram (11.6 PPG) and Myra Strickland (10.1 PPG), who are both averaging double-figure point totals in 2021-22.
Series Rewind vs. Eagles – Asheville holds the edge in the all-time series vs. Winthrop, 40-39. The Bulldogs have been especially dominant in the series lately as they have won the last 12 meetings between the two programs dating back to 2014-15.
