ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team held the lead at halftime Tuesday night vs. North Carolina A&T, but the Aggies mounted a second-half rally to take the victory, 75-68. The loss moves Asheville's record to 7-12 overall and 2-6 in Big South action.
Asheville saw three players hit double figures Tuesday evening. Nadiria Evans paced the offense, netting a team-high 24 points. Kai Carter was not far behind with 17 points to go with 11 rebounds for a double-double. Finally, Jordaynia Ivie had an efficient offensive night, shooting 5-for-8 from the field for 13 points.
"It was a back-and-forth game," said Head Coach Honey Brown. "We had the lead at halftime, but they put together a couple of runs in the second half to put us in a couple of holes. I'd prefer that we kept it a possession-to-possession game so that we could've had the opportunity to take the lead. We need to clean up some execution pieces to prevent those runs. We also spoke to the team afterward about playing well down the stretch, which we will continue to work on moving forward."
Asheville put together one of its better offensive halves of the season on Tuesday. Collectively, the Bulldogs shot an impressive 50 percent from the field and knocked down six of eight shots from the free throw line. Despite these numbers by the Bulldogs, the Aggies were the team that held the lead for the majority of the first two quarters. Asheville mounted an 8-0 run towards the end of the second quarter to gain a 31-29 lead at the break.
After the two teams traded buckets to begin the third quarter, the Aggies rattled off a 7-0 run to regain the lead. Even with the A&T run, the Bulldogs battled back to tie the score 49-49, heading the fourth quarter.
The two teams continued to jostle for the lead in the final quarter. The Bulldogs took a one-point lead with 2:57 to go in regulation after a made layup from Ivie made it 63-62.
However, A&T had one more good run in it, scoring 13 of the next 18 points to finish off the 75-68 victory.
Asheville will return to action on Saturday when it visits rival Winthrop for another Big South contest. Tip-off between the Eagles and Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
