Track & Field heads to Virginia for the Keydet Invitational
01.20.2022 | Track and Field
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams will hit the road this weekend to compete in VMI's Keydet Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The first events on Friday will get underway at 1 p.m., while Saturday's action will begin at 10 a.m.
Last Time Out – Asheville competed at last weekend's ETSU Invitational. Throughout the meet in Johnson City, the Bulldogs logged several steady performances that included nine podium finishes, two event victories, and one indoor school record.
Starring in the Shot Put – Perhaps the strongest part of Asheville's squad in 2021-22 so far has been in the field events, especially the shot put. Raina Jackson broke the women's indoor school record in early December, while Solomon McDonald has done the same on the men's side. Jack Choiniere has also started this season well as his tosses rank directly behind McDonald's marks on the program's all-time top performances.
Claudia continues to break records – The lone indoor record broken last weekend came from Claudia Prieto in the long jump. Prieto bested her own indoor school record that she set in December's Appalachian State Invitational (5.81m) with a leap of 5.82-meters last Saturday. The jump of 5.82-meters ranks fourth among Big South athletes so far during the 2021-22 indoor campaign.
Note from Coach – "This weekend will be similar to the last meet in that it will not feature a lot of teams or athletes but will still provide us with numerous competitive challenges," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "Some on our team will compete in events they have not yet done this season, such as the 4x400m, Distance Medley Relay, and 500m."
About the Meet – The Bulldogs will be joined in Lexington this weekend by Bridgewater, Christopher Newport, Columbia International, Concord, George Washington, Marshall, Queens (N.C.), Radford, UNC Wilmington, and Washington & Lee. For the complete schedule of events, click HERE.
How to Follow – There will not be a live stream at VMI. However, fans can follow results throughout the two days HERE.
