Track & Field closes out its first meet of 2022 on a high note

01.15.2022 | Track and Field

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams capped its first meet of 2022 with some stellar performances on the final day of the ETSU Track & Field Invitational on Saturday. Overall, six different Bulldogs logged podium finishes, two first-place nods, and one indoor school record.

"We had a number of very good performances with three event winners, top five performances and some PRs that were improvements on even outdoor performances," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "This past week of training has been challenging for a few on our team.  Some individuals have had adjust to our complete, full program they had not been exposed to for nearly a month."

The two first-place finishes from Asheville Saturday both came in the shot put. After winning their respective shot put events in early December's Appalachian State Invitational, the duo of Solomon McDonald (17.90-meters) and Raina Jackson (12.73-meters) repeated this feat on Saturday. Much like he did in the weight throw on Friday, Jack Choiniere finished right behind McDonald, logging a toss of 17.12-meters, which marked a new personal best for him in the event. Through the first two meets of 2021-22, McDonald and Choiniere now rank first and second all-time in the shot put during the indoor season for the Bulldogs.

The lone school record on the day came in the women's long jump. Claudia Prieto, who came into the meet as the school's indoor record holder in the event, edged her previous personal-best mark of 5.81-meters with a leap of 5.82-meters on Saturday. Prieto also placed fifth in the 60-meter dash later in the day as she slightly improved her personal-best time in that event as well.

The remainder of Asheville's standout outings Saturday came on the track. Brock Newsome (800-meter run – 1:54.95) and Nick Roberts (60-meter hurdles – 8.64) finished second and third in their respective events. For Newsome, his time in the 800-meter run ranks as the fifth-fastest ever by a Bulldog during the indoor season.

Anthony Mason also logged a top-five indoor time in Bulldog history Saturday. Mason finished seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.38, which ranks fifth among Bulldog runners.

Finally, perhaps the best showing of depth for Asheville occurred in the men's 3000-meter run. The Bulldogs had six of the top 12 runners in the event. John Ciprich led the way for this group with a time of 8:41.40 that ranked him fourth amongst Saturday's field.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to be back in action next weekend when they compete at Keydet Invitational hosted by VMI in Lexington, Va. on Friday and Saturday.
