Bulldogs fall in three sets at Tennessee Tech
09.04.2021 | Women's Volleyball
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a three-set decision on the road at Tennessee Tech (25-16, 25-20, 25-17) Saturday afternoon to close out the Golden Eagle Invitational.
Stat Standouts – Senior Molly Hackett had a balanced performance both offensively and defensively as she led Asheville in both kills (6) and digs (eight) on Saturday. Five other Bulldogs notched three kills or more, including Nina Finderle, who tallied four kills on eight attacks with no errors to go with five total blocks. Additionally, Finderle was recognized for her play all weekend and was named to the Golden Eagle Invitational All-Tournament team.
Set 1 – The opening set Saturday began well for Asheville as it led 12-11 midway through the frame. However, Tennessee Tech rattled off a 9-0 run to vault ahead of the Bulldogs. The sudden change in momentum proved too much for Asheville to overcome as it dropped the first frame, 25-16.
Set 2 – In perhaps the most competitive set of the match, both Tennessee Tech and Asheville jostled to seize control in the second frame. The score was tied at 11 different points, and there were a total of eight lead changes as well. One key that ultimately led to the Golden Eagles' 25-20 win was their success from the service line as they notched six aces in the second stanza alone.
Set 3 – Facing a potential three-set defeat, the Bulldogs battled in the third and were in a position to take the third as the score was tied at 18 in the late going. However, Tennessee Tech's success on the serve once again came into play as three aces helped the Golden Eagles build a 23-19 lead. Asheville took a pair of timeouts to try and throw off Tennessee Tech's rhythm, but the Golden Eagles held on for the 25-17 set victory.
Note from Coach – "We started better today in every set we played but weren't decisive enough on the opportunities we had," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "The team knows the journey is long and that they must keep improving every practice and every match until conference play."
Next Up – Asheville will return to action next Friday when it travels to Elon for a non-conference tilt. The start time for that match is set for 6 p.m.
