Bulldogs drop a pair of matches in Tennessee

09.03.2021 | Women's Volleyball

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches Friday by identical 3-0 scores to Valparaiso (25-23, 25-9, 25-21) and South Alabama (25-11, 25-19, 25-17) on the first day of the Golden Eagle Invitational hosted by Tennessee Tech.

Valparaiso Recap – Things were looking good for Asheville in the late stages of the first frame against Valparaiso as it led by three, 22-19, following a kill from Hannah Spicer. However, the Beacons promptly tied the score at 22 and then 23 before notching the final two points to edge the Bulldogs, 25-23.

The second set was all Valparaiso. Asheville's offense struggled to get going as it committed more attack errors than kills. Valpo, meanwhile, put together its most complete offensive effort of the match, hitting .406 as a team with 14 kills. The disparity between the two offenses led to the Beacons taking the second frame, 25-9.

It looked like in the middle of the frame that Valpo was about to run away from the Bulldogs as it built a five-point lead, 19-14. However, Asheville battled back to make the score 20-18 forcing the Beacons to burn a timeout. Valpo closed out the frame out of the timeout, scoring five of the following eight points to finish off the 3-0 victory.

South Alabama Recap
 – The Jaguars jumped on Asheville right away in both teams' second match of the day. South Alabama scored eight of the first nine points to put the Bulldogs in an early hole. That early deficit proved too large to overcome as South Alabama took the first frame decisively, 25-11.

The second frame saw the Bulldog offense use variety to its advantage. Six different Asheville players notched two or more kills in the second. Thanks to the varied offense, the Bulldogs trailed by just two points, 20-18, heading into the later stages of the frame. However, the Jaguars closed the set on a 5-1 run to go up 2-0 in the match, 25-19.

The third and final set was like the second as a late surge from South Alabama proved to be the difference. The Jaguars, who closed the frame on a 9-2, thwarted Asheville's efforts, including Molly Hackett's six kills on 11 attacks to close out the match, 25-17.

Hackett posted her first double-double of the season to lead Asheville with 10 kills and 14 digs. Lexy Cole also scored in double figures versus the Jaguars thanks to nine kills and a pair of block assists.

Quote from Coach
 – "The team had a tough outing today," remarked Head Coach Frederico Santos. "We were not consistent but had good stretches of play. Tomorrow is a new day. The girls know they can do better and will continue to fight."

Next Up
 – Asheville will be back in action on Saturday as it takes on Tennessee Tech in the weekend's final match. The first serve for that contest is set for 3 p.m. Eastern Time on ESPN+.
