BOONE, N.C.
 – Clara Wincheski broke the program's 5k record, clocking in at 17:41.31 to highlight the UNC Asheville cross country teams' season-opening races at the Covered Bridge Open Friday evening in Boone, N.C.

"I was very excited for Clara's race," said Head Coach Adam Puett. "Anytime you break a school record here at UNC Asheville, you've accomplished something great."

Wincheski's stellar performance was not only one from the women's team as fellow senior India Appleton logged a time of 18:21.19. Appleton's time set a new personal best and ranks eighth all-time in the history of the program.

In the men's 8k race, John Ciprich led the Bulldogs, placing 31st with a time of 26:21.57. Additionally, the foursome of Daniel Hopkins (26:58.16), Jax Ledford (27:08.10), Adam Hessler (27:14.62), and Andrew Okon (27:23.32) all finished in the upper half of runner in a field made up of nearly 140 competitors.

Overall, the men's team finished eighth on Friday, while the women's squad finished ninth.

"Both teams had a good start to the season," Puett added. "We had some good individual performances, but we have some work to do as a team. We come back to race the same course in two weeks, so we will get to test ourselves to see how much we have improved."

As Coach Puett mentioned, the Bulldogs will return to Boone in two weeks for the Fire Tower Open.
