Women’s soccer hosts Upstate in Big South showdown Wednesday

09.28.2021 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team returns home on Wednesday, welcoming USC Upstate to Greenwood Field this season at 6:00 p.m.

Bouncing Back
After dropping two close contests and having its midweek game postponed due to weather, the UNC Asheville Bulldogs traveled to Hampton on Saturday and picked up a strong 4-0 win. The Bulldogs blitzed the Pirates with four goals in the first 38 minutes of the game. Senior Courtney O'Malley picked up her second shutout win of the season on Saturday, collecting four saves in the process. The win evened up Asheville's conference record at 1-1-0.

Walk this Way
Senior Alice Walker led the offensive charge, scoring less than three minutes into the contest before adding a second in the eighth minute of the game. Madison Carter registered her first goal of the season in the fourth, while freshman Taylor Gardner scored her second.

Scouting the Spartans
Upstate enters the weekend 3-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play. The Spartans have played three common opponents thus far, falling to The Citadel and Appalachian State and tying Davidson. On the offensive end, the Bulldogs will need to mark Ashley Finn as the sophomore from Wake Forest has five goals on the season. Cora Brendle has gotten the majority of time in net, picking up 45 saves. As a team, the Spartans are being outshot 131-98, but have eight goals to their opponents' seven through eight games.

Series History
Asheville has gotten the better of USC Upstate, going 6-2 all-time. When the sides met in Spartanburg this past spring, the Bulldogs gutted out a double-overtime win as Gillian Oyos scored in the 109th minute to give Asheville a 2-1 victory.

Admission & COVID Protocols
Admission to Wednesday's match, along with all home UNC Asheville soccer matches this season, is free! Due to the prevalence of COVID in the greater Buncombe County Area, UNC Asheville Athletics asks spectators to please mask up and practice social distancing. We also encourage spectators to bring water and snacks as the concessions will be closed, but we will have food trucks (Ciao Y'all, Buggy Pops). Gates will open one hour prior to kickoff at the Field Drive entrance only.
