Bulldogs Fall in Series Opener to USC Upstate
05.20.2021 | Baseball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – USC Upstate scored 14 runs on 20 hits to fuel its 14-4 victory over the UNC Asheville baseball team Thursday evening at Greenwood Field.
Sebastian Dunn led the way offensively for Asheville, going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. Like Dunn, Drew Bristow (single, hit by pitch) and Ty Kaufman (single, walk) each reached base twice. Dominic Freeberger, Chris Troost, PJ Heintz, and Cam Johnson accounted for the four RBI in the contest.
Upstate's offense jumped on the Bulldogs early, scoring five runs in the first two innings. The Spartans, who put together three more multi-run innings later, held on to their early lead thanks to the work on the mound by starter Jordan Marks. Overall, Marks allowed two runs, scattered four Bulldog hits (all singles), and struck out eight Asheville hitters in six innings.
The Bulldog offense mounted a bit of a rally in the ninth, scoring two runs on two hits and had a chance for more with the bases loaded. However, Upstate's Jonathan Carlyle recorded the final out before any more damage could be done and, in doing so, finished off the 14-4 win for the Spartans.
Asheville and Upstate will close out their series on Friday with a doubleheader. The first pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+ with game two to follow roughly 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first contest.
