Bulldogs Close Out Regular Season at Aggie Classic
04.24.2021 | Track and Field
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams competed for the final time in the regular season Saturday at the Aggie Classic on the campus of North Carolina A&T. Overall, the Bulldogs logged six podium finishes to go along with several personal bests and 2021-bests.
"We competed well today, and despite heavy rain most of the day, our team registered numerous personal-bests and seasonal-bests," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "So we will emphasize getting over some irritations/injuries and getting ready for the conference championships, which begin in 16 days. I've seen our student-athletes, along with coaches Puett, Kimbrough, and Cannon, make the most of long breaks between meets. I'm sure we will be well prepared."
Sophomore John Ciprich picked up the lone event victory for Asheville Saturday in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Ciprich paced the field of 11 runners with a time of 9:32.95.
Daphne Bogert tied for second in the pole vault with a mark of 2.80-meters, while Zac Weas also finished second in the 110-meter hurdles. Weas, who also set a new season-best mark in the javelin, improved his prelim time from 14.88 to 14.80 in the finals.
Asheville also placed a pair of podium finishes in relays with times of 41.56 and 48.85 in the men's and women's races, respectively. The duo of Maya Stanley and Solomon McDonald set the new 2021-best marks in the discus throw and shot put. For McDonald, his shot put throw of 16.73-meters is the longest mark by a Bulldog since 2005.
The Bulldogs will return to action at the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 11-12. The Championships will take place on the campus of High Point at Vert Stadium.
