Women’s Basketball Travels to Longwood for Big South Quarterfinals Monday
03.07.2021 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The sixth-seeded UNC Asheville women's basketball team will begin play in the Hercules Tires Big South Women's Basketball Tournament Monday as the Bulldogs visit third-seeded Longwood in the quarterfinal round. Tip-off for Monday's game is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
Last Time Out – Asheville battled but ultimately fell to Campbell by a score of 52-51 last Wednesday in its regular season finale. With Wednesday's result, the Bulldogs finish the regular season with a 10-14 record overall and a 9-10 mark in Big South play.
All-Big South Honors – The Big South unveiled its 2020-21 women's basketball all-conference teams late last week. Nadiria Evans (First Team), Kai Carter (Second Team), and Tamiah Lewis (All-Academic) were the three Bulldogs to receive recognition for their work both on and off the court this season.
Tournament Time – Asheville sports an all-time record of 22-30 in the Big South Tournament. The Bulldogs, however, have been one of the league's toughest outs come March in recent years. Since 2014, Asheville has won at least one game in the tournament and posted a record of 13-4 during that stretch. Highlighting these recent runs by the Bulldogs were three trips to the league's championship game and two tournament titles (2016, 2017).
Shout Out to Coach – In a season unlike any other, first-year head coach Honey Brown has guided her Bulldogs to 10 victories in 2020-21. The 10 wins tie Brown for the most wins for a Bulldog head coach in their first season since the program moved to the Division I level. Lalon Jones also won 10 games during her first season leading the Bulldogs in 1989-90.
About Longwood - Longwood (13-10, 12-6 Big South) is coming off a historic regular season that saw the team finish a program-best third in the Big South. Longwood figures to be led by two All-Big South First Team members in Akila Smith and Kyla McMakin. Smith was also named the Big South Defensive Player of the Year after ranking third in the nation with 79 blocked shots.
Series Rewind vs. Longwood – Monday's matchup will be the third game this season between the Lancers and Bulldogs. Asheville defeated Longwood on back-to-back days to close out 2020 by scores of 74-69 and 68-52. Asheville, who sports a record of 15-7 all-time vs. Longwood, is 5-4 when playing at Longwood. Monday's game will be the second meeting between the Lancers and Bulldogs in the postseason, with the first occurring in 2017, where Asheville came away with a 65-59 victory.
How to Follow – Monday's game will air on ESPN3 and will also have live stats available. Furthermore, Mike Gore will have the radio call on Rewind 100.3.
