ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville cross country teams turned in strong showings at the Big South Cross Country Championships on Friday. The women's team placed third with 99 points and the men's squad finished fourth with 106 points.
In addition to the stellar team finishes, the Bulldogs had a few runners receive individual recognition by the Big South. Adam Hessler (5th – 24:22.9) and Clara Wincheski (8th – 18:05.6) both earned All-Big South honors by finishing in the top 12 in their respective races. The duo of Nathaniel Edwards and India Appleton were also honored by being named to the league's All-Academic squads. For Appleton, it marks the second straight season she has been recognized with All-Academic distinction.
As mentioned earlier, the women's team placed third amongst the fellow Big South schools. The third-place finish is the highest by the program since 2013, when it also finished third. In addition to Wincheski, Appleton narrowly missed out on earning All-Big South honors as well placing 14th with a time of 18:28.9. Both Wincheski's and Appleton's times Friday cracked the all-time list in program history. Wincheski's time ranks fifth all-time in a 5k race, while Appleton's ranks 12th.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs placed fourth for the fourth consecutive season. Asheville is joined by Charleston Southern as the only other program to place in the top four each year during that stretch. Hessler capped off a stellar freshman season by placing fifth. Hessler, who logged the fastest time in each of Asheville's three races this spring, and his fifth-place finish is the highest by a Bulldog men's cross country runner at the Big South Championships since 2000 where Brendan McGrane finished second.
Asheville was able to accomplish these stellar times and team success with young teams. Each of the five runners who scored for the men are underclassmen, while the women's scoring came from three juniors, one freshman, and one senior.
