Bulldogs Down Presbyterian in Four for Third Straight Victory

03.04.2021 | Women's Volleyball

CLINTON, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team notched its third straight victory Thursday evening as it downed Presbyterian in four sets (25-16, 25-23, 22-25, 25-16). The win improves Asheville's record to 3-4 on the season.

Stat Standouts – Asheville had several standout statistical performances Thursday. Peyton McClinton had a career-high 19 kills, and Molly Hackett attacked at a .419 clip to fuel a 15-kill outing as well. Setter Grace Volk picked up her second double-double of the season with 38 assists and 15 digs. Kasey West and Ona Elkins also finished the match with double-figure dig totals as each player finished with 12 digs apiece.

1st Set – After the two teams exchanged the first few points in the opening set, Asheville really got its offense clicking. The Bulldogs attacked at a .419 clip with 15 kills on their way to a convincing 25-16 victory to open the match. McClinton and Hackett combined for 11 kills on 19 attacks in the first frame alone.

2nd Set – Presbyterian would rebound in the second set. The Blue Hose built a five-point lead on the Bulldogs. Asheville regrouped to tie the score at 17. Following the Bulldog rally, the two squads exchanged points until the score was tied again at 23. Fortunately for Asheville, Elkins picked up an ace, and McClinton closed the set with another kill to give the Bulldogs the win, 25-23.

3rd Set – Facing a two-set deficit, Presbyterian put together its best performance Thursday in the third. PC had a tremendous defensive frame totaling 23 digs to keep the play alive. The Blue Hose turned that defensive effort into points for them and ended up taking the third frame, 25-22.

4th Set – Asheville and PC started the fourth, exchanging points again. The Bulldogs began to gain control with an 8-1 run to turn a 6-6 score into a 14-7 advantage for Asheville. Asheville kept the pressure on the Blue Hose and ended up finishing the match with a 25-16 victory.

Note from Coach – "The team played really, really well tonight," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "We put a lot of pressure on them from the onset of the game, and our offense flowed well. Of course, we can keep improving, and the team is aware that we need to keep working. Congratulations to our players on a great performance!"

Next Up – Asheville and Presbyterian will meet again Friday evening at PC. The first serve is once again scheduled for 6 p.m., and the match can be seen on ESPN+.
