Track & Field Puts Together Another Stellar Day at Winthrop
03.13.2021 | Track and Field
ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams put together more stellar performances during their second meet of the outdoor season Saturday at Winthrop. Overall, the Bulldogs won 13 events and broke two outdoor school records on the day.
"Overall, it was a good day with some improvements, event wins, school records, and big lifetime personal records," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "We still have some areas to continue to work on before our next meet. It was also great to see some of the middle and long-distance team back on the track."
Both new school records were set on the men's side for Asheville. First, Jalen Anderson broke the 100-meter dash record for the Bulldogs clocking in at 10.79. Anderson, who also won the 200-meter dash, broke the previous record of 10.82 set in 2017 by Hunter Koike. The other record-breaking outing for the Bulldogs was in the 4x100m relay. The quartet of Akin Williams, Anderson, Alex Williams, and Isaac Teasley paced the field with a time of 41.16, breaking the previous record of 41.82 set in 2018.
On top of those outings, Asheville's men's team had four other athletes win track events on the day. Bryson Riddick (400m), Alex Haines (1000m), Zac Weas (110m hurdles), and Sage Turner (2000m steeple) all led their respective fields in their given events.
With so much success on the track, the men's team had success in the field events too. Solomon McDonald paced the Bulldogs in several of the throwing events. McDonald's throws in the shot put (15.88-meters) and discus (44.33-meters) both set new personal-bests.
The women's team also had some stellar performances. Claudia Prieto matched her school outdoor record in the long jump that she set last time out with a leap of 5.78-meters on Saturday. Prieto also took the top spot in the 100-meter dash (12.34) and triple jump (11.70-meters). Alyx Evans (1000-meter) and Morgan Costelloe (200-meter steeple) also picked up event wins to help Asheville's point total.
Asheville will be back in action later this month when it competes in the Montreat Invitational on March 26-27.
