Track & Field Travels to Winthrop for Second Outdoor Meet
03.12.2021 | Track and Field
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track and field teams will return to competition on Saturday as they compete in a Dual/Tri-Meet at the Irwin Belk Complex in Rock Hill, S.C.
Last Time Out – The Bulldogs have one meet under their belt already during this outdoor season. Asheville competed against Winthrop and Coker in a tri-meet at the end of February and saw plenty of success. Overall, the Bulldogs won 16 events on the day and had at least one student-athlete in the top three in every event.
Record-Breaking Outing – Highlighting Asheville's first meet in a calendar year was the performance from junior Claudia Prieto. Prieto broke the school's outdoor record in the long jump with a leap of 5.78 meters. Prieto also won the triple jump (11.66-meters) and helped the 4x100 relay team win that event. Prieto was named the Big South's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week and the Bulldog of the Month in February for that performance. Additionally, Prieto also was named to the league's All-Academic team for the second time during her collegiate career.
Note From Coach - "We're looking forward to seeing what we can do now that we have one meet in our background and as we leave our heavier pre-competition/early training load/volume," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "The athletes should feel fresher going forward with this reduction and we will likely be getting slightly better weather, as well. Good weather conditions assist with good performances."
Rock Hill becoming Routine – Saturday will mark the second time in as many meets as the Bulldogs have gone to Winthrop to compete. The Bulldogs will make two more trips to Winthrop during this outdoor season, with those dates being April 10 and May 5.
About the Field – In addition to Winthrop and Asheville, Gardner-Webb will also be competing Saturday. More teams could be added into the field, but that will be determined closer to meet getting underway.
How to Follow – Saturday's results can be tracked by Mitchell Timing. Results should be posted shortly after the conclusion of each event.
