Volleyball Sweeps Gardner-Webb for Second Straight Victory

02.28.2021 | Women's Volleyball

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team picked up its second straight victory Sunday afternoon as it swept Gardner-Webb (25-19, 25-23, 25-20) in three sets. The win improves Asheville's record to 2-4 on the spring season.

Stat Standouts – Most of Asheville's offensive production came from the trio of Molly Hackett (10 kills), Peyton McClinton (nine kills), and Lexy Cole (eight kills, .438 hitting percentage). The three Bulldogs combined for 27 of the team's 32 kills. Grace Volk did a great job setting up the Bulldog offense with 30 assists with eight digs and a team-high five blocks. On the backend, Ona Elkins (11 digs) and Kasey West (14 digs) both had double-figure dig totals to help the defense as well.

1st Set – The Bulldogs began the opening stanza well, scoring four of the first five points. Gardner-Webb battled back in the middle stages of the frame to get within a point or two of the Bulldogs. Following a GWU kill to make the score 18-17 Asheville, the Bulldogs were able to put together a 6-0 run to grow its lead to seven, 24-17.  The late run gave Asheville enough cushion to take the first set, 25-19.

2nd Set – Much like it did in the first, Asheville jumped on Gardner-Webb early to build an early advantage. The Bulldogs scored five of the first six points forcing GWU to take a timeout in the second. The timeout seemed to work as Gardner-Webb erased the Bulldog lead to tie the score at 20 eventually. However, Asheville again made enough key plays down the stretch to take the second set, 25-23.

3rd Set – Riding the momentum of winning five straight sets, Asheville once again built a sizable lead in the third. The Bulldogs led Gardner-Webb by 11 points, 21-10, after a kill from Hackett. GWU did make one last comeback attempt as it whittled the deficit down to four points on a couple of occasions. The Bulldogs, however, were able to finish off the match before the lead shrunk anymore, 25-20.

Note from Coach - "We are very proud of our players' determination today to get the win," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "Our serving intensity, our defense, our game overall was very consistent, which made it difficult for our opponent. Even when they made point runs and tightened the score, we maintained our poise and had great confidence to overcome."

Next Up – Asheville will be back in action next Thursday and Friday when it travels to Presbyterian for a pair of matches. Thursday's match is slated to get underway at 6 p.m., while Friday's is scheduled for a first serve of 4 p.m.
