Track & Field Turns in Several Strong Performances at Winthrop

02.27.2021 | Track and Field

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams started its 2021 outdoor season off on a high note Saturday at Winthrop. Overall, the Bulldogs won 16 events total and had at least one finish in the top three in every event they competed in on the day. Highlighting the day's action was Claudia Prieto breaking the school's outdoor record in the long jump with a mark of 5.78 meters.

Prieto also claimed the top spot in the triple jump (11.66-meters) and helped Asheville's 4x100 relay team win that event, too, with a time of 50.23. Prieto's triple jump mark set a new career-best, while her leap in the long jump matched her personal-best that occurred during the 2020 indoor season.

Prieto was not the only Bulldog to have a near-record-breaking performance. Daphne Bogert nearly broke the school record in the pole vault but missed it by .01 meters. Bogert now holds the second-best mark in program history, trailing only Crystal Goure's 3.05-meter vault in 2001.

Solomon McDonald also had a near-record broken. The junior logged a mark of 15.75-meters in the shot put. McDonald's toss ranks as the third-highest in program history and the top mark for any Bulldog since Brian MacPhee recorded a throw of 16.02-meters back in 2001.

"Overall, we had some very good performances in the field and on the track," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "It was exactly one year ago that we last competed as a team. It was good for all of our women and men to be rewarded with the opportunity to compete again. It is a reward for training long and hard. There are some aspects to work/improve upon going forward. We will be a fresher team within the next one to two months as our athletes are still in a relatively heavy phase with their weight training."

The Bulldogs will be back in action on March 13 when they return to Winthrop for a dual/tri-meet.
