Asheville, N.C. – After opening the season with an energizing 2-1 victory over Longwood, the UNC Asheville men's soccer team welcomes Winthrop to town on Sunday for a match with the Eagles.
Last Sunday, Asheville returned to the pitch for the first time since 2019, outlasting Longwood 2-1 for their first season-opening win since 2015. Rookie Conor Behan Behan had an impressive debut, registering three shots and netting the first goal of the season en route to Big South Freshman of the Week honors. The Bulldogs, who got strong play in net from freshman Leon Musial, pressured Longwood into an own goal to take home the 2-1 victory. The last time the Bulldogs started 2-0 against Big South foes was in 2016 (Longwood, Liberty), and the last time Asheville began a season 2-0 overall was in 2001.
On the other side, Winthrop, which was selected seventh in the preseason Big South Poll, enters Sunday 0-2 with losses at South Carolina and at Campbell. Jonathan Foster and Grayson Woodard found the back of the net against the Gamecocks, but the Eagles were blanked 6-0 at Campbell last Sunday. Winthrop has used three goalkeepers so far this season, with Sam Jones registering eight saves but letting in seven goals.
Matt Stradley will have the play-by-play on ESPN+ starting at 1:30 p.m.
