Track and Field Opens Season at Winthrop Saturday
02.26.2021 | Track and Field
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track and field teams will open their season Saturday in a meet against Winthrop and Coker at the Irwin Belk Track Complex in Rock Hill, S.C. The first events are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
Remember When – The last time Asheville competed in a meet was back at the 2020 Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Bulldogs, who had their outdoor season canceled due to the pandemic, placed fifth at those Championships. Some highlights from that meet included Bryson Riddick being named the Big South's Indoor Freshman of the Year, the 4x400 relay team breaking the school record with a time of 3:15.42, and several other podium finishes across the two days.
New Leadership – Asheville will be under new leadership this season as Joel Williams was promoted to the position of Head Coach last July. Williams is no stranger to the Bulldog program though as he has spent the last 12 years as an assistant coach for Asheville.
About the 2020-21 Bulldogs – Asheville returns several student-athletes that have had success at the collegiate level. Among the returners are Bryson Riddick (400-meter) and Akin Williams (60-meter) for the men's team and the tandem of Claudia Prieto (Long Jump) and Alyx Evans (800-meter), who all earned All-Conference recognition during the 2019-20 indoor season. In addition to the returners, the Asheville has brought in a large recruiting class to supplement both the men's and women's rosters.
About the Field – Much like Asheville, Winthrop saw its last competition at the 2020 Big South Indoor Championships. The Eagles placed eighth in men's standings and ninth in the women's standings at that meet. WU did have some standout performances that included a trio of outings that earned All-Big South recognition.
Coker, meanwhile, has already competed in two meets this year. The Cobras have seen some success in those two meets as they have broken a few school records in various events. One of those record-breaking outings was from Jada Holton as she broke the school's record in the triple jump in back-to-back meets, which led her to be named the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Indoor Field Athlete of the Week on February 16.
About the Meet – As mentioned earlier, the events will get underway at 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning with the pole vault, long jump, shot put, and discus. Overall, there will be 17 events on Saturday. The meet schedule can be found HERE.
