LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville swimming and diving team continues to rewrite the program's record book as the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Swimming and Diving Championships continued Tuesday. Overall, the Bulldogs broke three school records and two freshman records and currently sitting in fourth place with 666.5 points.
Two of the three school records broken Tuesday occurred in relays. Nora Segurola Larrinaga kicked off the 400-yard medley relay with a lifetime best split of 56.11. Mikaela Fullerton, Addison Wright, and Delaney Carlton followed and together clocked in at 3:43.44 overall to top the previous top time of 3:48.36 set at the 2018 CCSA Championships. Their time of 3:43.44 also was the third-fastest time overall in the event.
The other relay record that fell was in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Carlton, Larrinaga, Jessie Frank and Abby Parks teamed up to earn another podium finish with a time of 1:33.16. It marks the second consecutive season that Asheville has set a new school record in the event.
The final school record broken by the Bulldogs occurred in the 100-yard breaststroke. Fullerton, a member of the 400y medley relay team, finished tied for third with a time of 1:02.15. This time narrowly tops the previous record of 1:02.59 set by Morgan Rulevich at the 2018 CCSA Championships.
On top of the school records that fell, Wright set two new freshman records in the 100-yard fly (55.80) and 100-yard backstroke (56.84) during the morning session. Wright came back in the finals later in the day and placed eighth and 18th in those respective events.
"I'm having a blast sharing this amazing experience with my team," said Wright. "Everyone's performances are inspiring each other to be the best we can. Cheering for my teammates is one of my favorite parts, and I'm incredibly thankful to be in this swim and dive family."
In addition to the records that fell Tuesday, Asheville had 18 swimmers compete in the finals of their respective events after 10 did the same on Monday. Several other Bulldogs put forth their best times of the 2020-21 season, and some others swam the best times of their careers in their given events.
