LYNCHBURG, Va.
 – The UNC Asheville swimming and diving team matched its best-ever finish at the 2021 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Swimming and Diving Championships, placing fourth with 1,012.5 points. The point total, a new program record at the CCSA Championships, helped Head Coach Elizabeth Lykins earn CCSA Coach of the Year honors for the third straight season.

"To complete this very challenging year with such success in the pool and on the boards is simply incredible," Lykins said afterward. "Even with the successes we had during this pandemic, the biggest reward is to have competed together as one team. We could not be more grateful for this opportunity."

Wednesday's action began well for the Bulldogs setting up an exciting finish in the late afternoon and evening. 14 swims earned spots in the finals later in the day. Freshman Abby Parks set her second freshman record of the week, clocking in 51.42 in the 100-yard freestyle.

Parks was not alone in setting the bar high as at least one Bulldog notched a season-best swim in each of the four prelim events. There was no better example of improvement for Asheville than the 200-yard backstroke as each swimmer (Christa Jones, Nora Segurola Larrinaga, Addison Wright) that took part all set new season-best times in the event.

However, Asheville's work was not done as it held a narrow 15.5-point lead on rival Campbell heading to the finals.

The Bulldogs answered the bell in a big way recording nine lifetime-best swims and breaking a pair of school records. Parks swam even faster than she did in the morning in the first part of the 400-yard free relay, recording a split time of 50.56 breaking her own freshman record and setting a new program-best mark. Parks' fast start helped the relay team that included Jessie Frank, Bela Stuart, and Delaney Carlton to finished third with a time of 3:24.33, which broke yet another school record.

This record-breaking relay outing concluded a strong run of relays for Asheville. Over the three days of the Championship, the Bulldogs had four relay teams find a place on the podium. To put this accomplishment in perspective, Asheville had just one relay team ever finish in the top three before this season.

Making the podium in four relays is an amazing feat, and something few teams can boast," added Lykins. "Breaking school and freshmen records is always an outstanding accomplishment and should be celebrated."

The future is bright for the Bulldogs as they will bring back most of their team for the 2021-22 season as they lose just four student-athletes to graduation.
