LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville swimming and diving team turned in a stellar first day at the Collegiate Coastal Sports Association (CCSA) Swimming and Diving Championships. A trio of podium finishes, two school records, and one freshman record highlighted Monday's action for Asheville. After day one, the Bulldogs sit in fourth place with 281 points.
"Today was such an exciting day for the team," said Delaney Carlton. "We did our job of getting in the right heats this morning and earned all the points tonight! The energy on the pool deck was incredible, and the Bulldogs are ready for moving day tomorrow!"
The preliminaries opened Monday's action, and the Bulldogs showed well as Asheville advanced 10 swimmers to the finals in their respective events. Highlighting the prelims were swims by Carlton and Abby Parks in the 50-yard freestyle. Carlton broke the school record in the event clocking in at 23.06, and Parks was not too far behind with a time of 23.11 that established a new freshman record. The standout swims were not done in the 50-yard free for the Bulldogs as Jessie Frank (24.09) and Sammy Kershner (24.35) set new lifetime-best times in the event as well.
After a brief break in the action, the 3-meter diving event took place. The Bulldog divers scored 23 points for Asheville. Freshman Jade Canady led the team with 165.00 points placing 19th amongst the field, while Jessica Brock (147.20) and Megan Almond (87.40) also competed.
Asheville held onto its momentum when action resumed for the finals. Starting things off, the quartet of Nora Segurola Larrinaga, Mikaela Fullerton, Addison Wright, and Carlton combined to place third in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.47. The time of 1:41.47 broke the previous school record of 1:43.85 set at the 2019 CCSA
Championships.
Fast times kept rolling in for Asheville in the 500-yard freestyle as Larrinaga set a lifetime-best time of 5:06.24. In the evening's final individual event, which was the finals of the 50-yard free, the trio of Frank, Carlton, and Parks each bested their times from the prelims to establish new lifetime best times. Carlton's (22.93) and Parks' (23.07) rebroke the school and freshman records set earlier in the day. Additionally, Carlton's time of 22.93 marks the first time a UNC Asheville swimmer has clocked in under the 23-second mark.
The Bulldogs will aim to keep things rolling Tuesday when the CCSA Championships resume. Prelims kick things off at 10 a.m., with the finals set to begin at 6 p.m. Watch both sessions HERE, or follow the live results HERE.
