ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Fresh off an exciting victory to begin Big South play, the UNC Asheville women's basketball team will return to action on New Year's Day when it visits USC Upstate. Tip-off for Saturday's game is set for 4 p.m., and the game can be watched on ESPN+.
Last Time Out – Asheville knocked off rival Radford by a score of 69-60 last Wednesday at Kimmel Arena. The win evens the Bulldogs' overall record at 6-6 on the 2021-22 campaign.
Big win to start Big South play – Wednesday's win over Radford continued the trend of Asheville's recent success in conference openers. The Bulldogs have now won four of the last five league openers, and they will aim to move to 2-0 in Big South play on Saturday for the first time since the 2015-16 season.
Carter catching fire – A key in Wednesday's contest was the play of Kai Carter as she finished with a team-high 19 points. Carter has stepped up lately as she has averaged nearly 15 points per game in her last eight games compared to a 9.3 scoring average in the first four games this season.
Best things come in threes – Asheville put together one of its best shooting efforts of the season in its last time out. As a team, the Bulldogs knocked down 10 3-pointers, which was a new season-high. Overall, five different Bulldogs drained a three in the win, with Carter (3-for-7) and Faith Adams (3-for-3) leading the charge from beyond the arc. Furthermore, it was the most threes Asheville had hit in a game since last February against Winthrop when it knocked down 11 triples.
Filling the Stat Sheet – A name that pops up several times when looking at the Big South current statistical leaders is Asheville's Nadiria Evans. Evans is the only player in the conference to rank in the top 10 in scoring average (1st – 17.6), assists per game (6th – 3.0), and rebounds per game (9th – 6.3).
About USC Upstate – USC Upstate will enter Saturday's matchup with Asheville with an 8-3 record. The eight victories are not only the most of any Big South team so far, but they also match the team's win total from all last season. Upstate has been particularly good at home with an undefeated 5-0 record at the G.B. Hodge Center.
Series Rewind vs. Upstate – Historically, the Bulldogs have held the edge against the Spartans, winning nine of the 16 all-time matchups. However, Upstate downed Asheville on back-to-back days last February at Kimmel Arena. Before those two losses, though, the Bulldogs rattled seven straight wins in the series.
