Gold in second after round one of French Broad Collegiate Invitational

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's golf team opened up play in the second annual French Broad Collegiate Invitational at its home course of The Cliffs at Walnut Cove on Monday, with Madyson Gold shooting a 1-over-par 72 to sit just one shot back of the leader.
After starting the day with a bogey, the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native birdied hole No. 11 and registered another birdie on No. 14 and was an even par 35 to start the day. Gold was even through six holes, doubled No. 7 but bounced back with a birdie on No. 8 to finish 1-over-par on the Par 71. The par 72 was just two strokes off Gold's personal best round.
Despite struggling on the front nine, sophomore Phoebe Carles birdied holes No. 11, No. 14 and No. 15 to finish 3-over-par.
As a team, UNC Asheville is just four strokes back of Gardner-Webb and Western Carolina who are tied for first with team tallies of 15-over-par 299. Venecia Zaia birdied three of the last nine holes to finish 6-over-par on the day, while Hailey Pendleton rounded out the scoring for the team.
Round two from The Cliffs at Walnut Cove begins tomorrow morning with split tees on holes No. 1 and No. 10. Follow all the live stats on Golfstat.com.
