Men’s basketball drops contest at Chattanooga

11.14.2021 | Men's Basketball

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.  – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team visited SoCon-favorite Chattanooga for a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Mocs by a score of 75-45.

Asheville would hang around in the early part of the first half, but Chattanooga established a lead and was able to slowly extend its advantage. The Bulldogs struggled from downtown, going just 4-of-20, but would get 23 points from its bench. The Bulldogs drop to 1-2, while Chattanooga improves to 2-0 on the young season.

"Disappointed in the outcome of the game, we obviously had a lot of trouble scoring today," said UNC Asheville head coach Mike Morrell. "From missing some open looks to getting open looks for our better offensive players. Chattanooga had a lot to do with that, they've got a really good team. We look forward to getting a chance to bounce Thursday."

What's Next
The Bulldogs will have a few days off before returning to McKenzie Arena on Thursday, this time facing Tennessee Tech as part of the Coke Zero Sugar Classic multi-team event hosted by Chattanooga.

The Game at a Glance

  • Trent Stephney totals 13 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist
  • Jamon Battle scores 8, grabs 5 boards
  • Chattanooga has three players reach double figures, totals 49 rebounds

How it Happened
Chattanooga jumped out to a 5-0 lead as Stephney would get the Bulldogs on the board. The Mocs would go on a 9-0 run before Thorpe got to the rim for the first time of the day. With Chattanooga looking to pull away, UNC Asheville closed the half with a 7-3 run to make the score 35-18 at the break.

Coty Jude got into the mix to start the second, as the three ball began to fall a bit for the Bulldogs. Asheville pulled to within 18, but the Mocs would match the Bulldogs from here, eventually taking the contest by a final of 75-45.
