GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team closed out its 2021 fall season with a four-set battle on the road at North Carolina A&T. Despite the effort put forth by the Bulldogs, they ultimately fell to the Aggies (25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-13). Asheville closes out the fall season with an overall record of 6-19 that includes a 4-12 mark in Big South contests.
Stat Standouts – Asheville had a trio of players score in double figures on Saturday. Molly Hackett led the charge with 13 kills and six digs in her final collegiate match. Fellow senior Peyton McClinton added eight kills on top of 10 digs. Lexy Cole rounded out the offensive leaders for the Bulldogs, with nine kills and two block assists. Defensively, Anna Skryd led the charge with 14 digs in her final match as a Bulldog.
Set 1 – North Carolina A&T came out ready to roll in the opening stanza. Five different Aggies tallied two kills or more, and they collectively attacked the Asheville defense at a .333 clip. Despite the hot-hitting Aggie offense, Asheville trailed by just one point, 18-17, late in the frame. A&T, however, put together a 7-2 run to close out a 25-19 victory.
Set 2 – The Aggies built an early four-point lead, 11-7, forcing the Bulldogs to take an early timeout. The break in the action seemed to throw off A&T's momentum as Asheville got the deficit down to two points, 13-11. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the Aggies answered by growing their lead to as many as eight points, 20-12. Asheville rallied to close the gap a bit, but the eight-point hole proved too large to overcome as the Aggies finished off the 25-19 win.
Set 3 – Facing a possible three-set defeat, the Bulldogs put together its best effort of the match in the third. The tandem of Cole and Hackett combined for 11 kills on 18 attempts to give the Bulldogs a definite boost. The last run from Asheville got started with an ace from Skryd to make it 20-19 Bulldogs. Three kills from Hackett and two more by Cole finished Asheville's first set win of the match, 25-22.
Set 4 – The fourth set began with both teams swapping turns with the lead. The last switch in momentum seemed to occur when the Aggies went on a 4-0 lead to change an 8-8 score into a 12-8 advantage. Asheville got the deficit down to three points on a few occasions, but another big run from the Aggies (11-1) closed out the set and match, 25-13.
Note from Coach – "Our team fought hard tonight, and they can leave with their heads up that they gave their very best," said Head Coach Frederico Santos. "It was not the way we wanted it to end, but we are proud of our team. Also, it was not the season we wanted to have but to grow in life, the many roads traveled are filled with adversity, obstacles, and opportunities to learn. We are better for it and will be back stronger. Beyond thankful for the work our seniors have put in their past four years and in the most difficult season, they showed up to practice ready to work and always gave their 100%."
