Women’s soccer hosts High Point for regular-season finale Tuesday

10.25.2021 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's soccer team will cap off its fall 2021 regular season on Tuesday afternoon, hosting High Point at Greenwood Field for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.

Big South Scenarios
Having won three straight, the Bulldog have put themselves in position to qualify for the Big South Tournament with either a tie or win on Tuesday. If Asheville moves on, it will play its first-round match either Saturday or Sunday on the road.

Re-writing the Record Books
With a 2-1 victory over Longwood on Saturday, Asheville has won three games in a row for the first time since 2015, and its five conference wins are the most since 2006. Additionally, the six wins on the season (6-10-1, 5-4-0) are the most since 2017. Freshman Taylor Gardner has already etched her name into the UNC Asheville record books, becoming the first player to win the Big South Freshman of the Week honor on October 18. Gardner followed that feat up by scoring in a 4-1 win at Winthrop and the crucial 2-1 victory over Longwood on Saturday to give the rookie six goals on the season. With the victories, Courtney O'Malley has moved into sixth place all-time with 218 career saves.

Scouting the Panthers
After starting the season 0-7-1, High Point has been on an absolute tear, going 7-1 in conference play. The Panthers sit as the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big South tournament, conceding just 11 goals to Big South foes (T, 2nd most). The Panthers have three of the top six scorers in league play, with Magdalena Schwarz and Emily Mashinski each totaling six goals.

Series History
High Point has the advantage in the all-time series, going 14-8-3. The Bulldogs are riding a three-game loss streak in the series, last winning at Greenwood in 2017.

Admission & COVID Protocols
Admission to Tuesday's match, along with all home UNC Asheville soccer matches this season, is free! Due to the prevalence of COVID in the greater Buncombe County Area, UNC Asheville Athletics asks spectators to please mask up and practice social distancing. We also encourage spectators to bring water and snacks as the concessions will be closed, but we will have food trucks. Gates will open one hour prior to kickoff at the Field Drive entrance only.
