Women’s Soccer travels to Winthrop Wednesday

10.19.2021 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C.  The UNC Asheville women's soccer team will hit the road for the last time this regular season as it takes on Winthrop at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Momentum at the Right Time
The Bulldogs picked up a crucial win against Presbyterian last Wednesday, moving to 3-4 in the Big South. Gillian Oyos and Barrett Eidson put the Bulldogs on the board early, and a late goal from Taylor Gardner helped Asheville get by the Blue Hose 3-2. The Bulldogs are now tied for seventh-place and are only four points back from the sixth spot, with Radford and Winthrop occupying fifth and sixth with 13 points apiece.

Scouting the Eagles
Winthrop started out Big South play at 4-1-1, but have since lost three straight games, getting outscored 10-1 in the losing streak. The Eagles are led by standout freshman Anna Kate Highsmith, who is tied for 10th in the Big South with 5 goals scored this season, while also leading Winthrop in shots-on-goal and total points. Highsmith is not the only one who has found the back of the net, however, as Winthrop leads the league with 13 different goal scorers on the season.

Series History
The Bulldogs hold the slight advantage all-time against the Eagles at 11-10-1, with the last win coming in the 2018 season. In last year's contest, Winthrop won 2-0 at Greenwood Field, outshooting the Bulldogs 22 to nine.
