Women’s soccer tops Presbyterian 3-2 at Greenwood

10.13.2021 | Women's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. The UNC Asheville women's soccer team welcomed Presbyterian to town on Wednesday night, scoring a 3-2 victory over the Blue Hose.

The Bulldogs got on the board just before half and traded goals in the second to hold onto the one-goal victory. The win lifts Asheville's conference record to 3-4-0, while Presbyterian drops to 0-7-1. The Bulldogs now sit just one point shy of sixth place in the Big South standings, which would earn them a spot into the Big South Tournament.

"It was a long week on the road against tough opponents so it was great to be back here and get the win at the end of the tournament," said head coach Andy McNab. "I think the first goal was huge because it was at a time of the game where we weren't playing very well so we put ourselves in a good position with that. We made some adjustments at the break and had great energy in the second half."

The Game at a Glance

How it Happened
It was Presbyterian that came out firing, registering five of the first six shots. As the Bulldogs got settled in, forcing Megan Serrano to make a pair of saves. As the chances continued, Asheville worked the ball into the offensive third, where Eidson ripped a bouncing ball from the 18 into the net.

"Barrett is one of the hardest-working players I've coached," McNab said of the junior. "She's always put herself in the right position this season, and now she's just seeing the rewards for the hard-working player she is.

Lindie Clark registered a shot right out of the break, and minutes later, Oyos was able to beat the Blue Hose goalkeeper to a through ball and flick it by for the second goal of the contest. While Asheville pressed, Presbyterian responded with a goal of its own in the 64th.

With the teams trading opportunities, Alice Walker fired a shot on frame and Gardner was there to bury the rebound to make the score 3-1. Once again, the Blue Hose responded with a score of their own but Asheville buckled down for the final seven minutes, not allowing Presbyterian another chance.

"I think it's just all going back to confidence," McNab said of the team scoring three goals for just the second time this season. "We could have even scored more tonight. We had 17 shots in the second half and I think that goes to the mindset of wanting to be attack first and it's a testament to the work ethic of the team."
