ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's golf team had a record-breaking day on Sunday, setting a new program low for team a round (288) while Venecia Zaia carded the lowest individual round in program history (67).
The Plantation Course at Edisto Island is a par-71, and the team round of 288 (+4) breaks the previous record of 297, set just a few weeks ago at the ECU Pirate Invitational. Prior to that 297, Asheville's lowest team round was 299 back in 2017-18. After round one, the Bulldogs are tied for second place overall trailing only the host College of Charleston.
Zaia, who has been on a tear of late, set the new individual round record by three strokes (70) which was carded by Adelyn Deery back in the 2018-19 season (NKU Fall Classic). With her 4-under-par performance, Zaia currently sits in first place individually, birdieing holes No. 8, 10, 12 and 13. A sophomore from Murrieta, California, Zaia has gone 55 holes in tournament play without registering a bogey.
Madyson Gold was a big factor in Sunday's strong performance, setting a personal record for herself with a 72 to finish 1-over-par for the day. Gold did well on the back nine, birdieing No. 10 and 13. Phoebe Carles was just a shade behind Gold, carding a 73 with birdies on No. 9, 10 and 17. Amber Capote rounded out the scoring for Asheville, shooting a 5-over-par 76 on the day.
Round two from Edisto Island begins tomorrow morning, be sure to follow all the action on Golfstat.com.
