Bulldogs Drop Sunday Matchup at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Freshman Harry Thursfield turned in a three-set victory for the second day in a row, but it was not enough as UNC Asheville's men's tennis team fell at Furman, 6-1, Sunday.
Matched up against the Paladins' Ivan Mitric at No. 4 singles, Thursfield narrowly claimed the first set, 7-6, before Mitric came back to even the match with a 6-4 result in Set Two. Thursfield would claim the only point for the Bulldogs (3-5), winning the final set 1-0 (10-7).
The Bulldogs did have other great opportunities to score that could have completely changed the outlook of the dual, as three other singles matches went into three sets.
After dropping the first set 6-0, Quinn Fender, playing Drew Singerman at No. 6, came back to take the second set, 6-3, and level the match. Singerman would answer, however, winning the third set, 6-2.
Leo Bierbaum won his first set against Furman's Henrik Atlevi, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot. Altoveli, though, would bounce back with a 6-3 victory in Set Two and close out the third set with a 6-3 win.
Charlie Morkel also had a solid chance for a point at No. 2 singles against Jake Munns, taking the first set quickly, 6-1. Munns came back in the second, claiming a 6-4 victory. The third set was tied at 5-5, but Munns would take the next two games and claim a point for the Paladins.
"Furman was a bit too strong for us today," head coach Tom Hand said. "But we made them work for all of it."
The Bulldogs return to Asheville for three straight home matches next week, beginning with a 2 p.m., Wednesday, showdown with Tusculum at the Asheville Racquet Club.
