Bulldogs Battle but fall to Florida
12.09.2020 | Women's Basketball
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's basketball team hosted a team from the SEC for the first time in program history as the University of Florida came to Kimmel Arena on Wednesday. The Bulldogs battled but ultimately fell to the Gators, 70-48. With Wednesday's result, the Bulldogs' record moves to 1-3 on the 2020-21 campaign.
Individually, Nadiria Evans led all Bulldogs on the score sheet with 14 points. Faith Adams provided a boost off the bench scoring a career-high eight points, while Kai Carter nearly notched a double-double with nine points and matching a career-best with eight rebounds.
Florida opened Wednesday's contest going to the paint early and often to generate offense. The Gators outscored Asheville 14-8 in the paint and controlled the glass out rebounding the Bulldogs 15-7 in the first 10 minutes. With those factors at play, the opening quarter ended with Florida on top, 21-9.
After spending most of the first quarter on the bench in early foul trouble, Evans returned in the second and netted eight quick points to give the Bulldogs a spark. As a team, Asheville boosted its shooting percentage to over 40 percent in the quarter and, in doing so, was able to keep pace with the Gators. The score read 36-22 Florida at the halftime break.
When the two teams returned for the second half, the Gators turned up the pressure on Asheville defensively. Florida held the Bulldogs to 16.7 percent shooting from the field and expanded its lead to 55-29, heading into the final frame.
Despite being down by double figures, Asheville kept fighting. The Bulldogs began the final quarter on a 14-2 run, which cut the deficit considerably. Overall, the Bulldogs outscored the Gators 19-15 in the fourth. A big key in Asheville's success was its work getting to the free throw line and converting as it knocked down eight of its nine attempts.
Asheville will be back in action on Saturday when it travels to Orangeburg, South Carolina, to take on South Carolina State. Tip-off for that game is set for 2 p.m.
