12.22.2020 | Men's Basketball
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team traveled to Marshall on Tuesday evening, falling to the Thundering Herd 88-67.
The Bulldogs held the lead until late in the first, but Marshall closed the half by scoring 13 of the last 19 points to take control of the game. Asheville's record drops to 3-4 overall, while Marshall improves to 6-1.
Tajion Jones totaled 18 points on four 3-pointers, while Trent Stephney scored 12 points and Coty Jude, who returned to the starting lineup, totaled 11. The Thundering Herd, who knocked down 12 threes (42.9 percent) in the win, had two 20-point scorers in Taevion Kinsey (26) and Mikel Beyers (20). Asheville shot 44.3 percent from the floor and scored 31 points in the paint, but Marshall was even more efficient, shooting 51.6 percent for the game.
The game was back and forth to start, but it didn't take long for the three ball to fall for the Bulldogs, with Jude, Jones and Stephney each knocking down 3-pointers to put Asheville up 22-16 at the 9:23 mark. Marshall worked its way back, taking a 26-24 lead before Jones knocked down his third 3-pointer of the half to put the Bulldogs back in front. The Thundering Herd responded however, closing out the half on a 9-2 run to take a six-point lead (35-29) into halftime.
It was all Marshall to start the second, as the Thundering Herd connected from the free throw line and from downtown and extended their lead to 15. Jones did his best to keep Asheville in the mix, knocking down his fourth 3-pointer of the game and scoring in the paint as the Bulldogs looked to cut into the lead.
The deficit was too much to overcome, as Kinsey and Beyers seemingly answered every time the Bulldogs scored down the stretch. Despite the score, Asheville wouldn't quit, scoring 11 of the last 13 points before ultimately falling 88-67.
What's Next
Asheville will have a bit of a layoff between games, returning to the court on December 30 when it travels to Longwood for the opening round of its Big South season against the Lancers.
