ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team closed out fall practice with an intrasquad scrimmage Friday evening at Greenwood Baseball Field. In a matchup of Bulldogs, the Blue team withstood a late rally from the White team to come away victorious by a score of 9-6.
"I thought we saw some younger guys compete well," said UNC Asheville Head Baseball Coach Scott Friedholm. "There were a few half innings that got away from us that we need to clean up but I liked the way we played defensively, swung the bats, and ran the bases. If we keep that up, we'll like what we see next spring."
The Blue team jumped out early scoring five runs on four hits in the top of the second inning. Team White would attempt to play catch up the rest of the game and nearly completed the comeback as it had the go-ahead run at the plate in the ninth inning before running out of outs and falling by a 9-6 final score.
Team Blue received offensive contributions up-and-down the lineup as all nine position players reached base at least once. Easton Jones led the Blue squad in the hit column with a pair of hits. Dominic Freeberger drew three walks and stole a pair of bases, while the tandem of Will Barbour and Ty Kaufman provided a boost at the bottom of the order driving five runs, drawing two walks to go with a pair of hits.
Team White also had its share of players having good at-bats. Seven of the nine hitters for the White team logged hits with eight reaching base once. Kohl Abrams came through with a two-run double in third inning to give his team its first runs of the game. Fermin Osio and Kole Harris finished the night with two hits a piece.
On the mound, there was a different pitcher every inning for both teams. Seniors Kole Harris (White) and Trey Jernigan (Blue) started the game for their respective squads. Of the 18 pitchers that logged time on the mound Friday, 11 of them hurled scoreless frames.
