LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville swimming & diving team began its final competition of the semester with several stellar performances. There were a pair of records broken and 17 season-best outings by the Bulldogs on the first day of the TYR '85 Liberty Invitational.
The morning session was good to Asheville, as there were 16 season-best swims by Bulldogs, with four of those being lifetime bests.
Delaney Carlton topped the group by swimming a time of 23.13 in the 50-yard freestyle. Carlton's time was not only her lifetime-best but also set a new school record in the event. The tandem of Aleta Jewell (5:13.14) and Nora Segurola Larrinaga (5:16.05) also posted their top time ever in the 500-yard freestyle, while Amelia Ham did the same in the 200-yard individual medley (2:08.32).
Finally, the Bulldogs had another record broken in the lone relay Friday. The foursome of Addison Wright, Alexis Walker, Sammy Kershner, and Abby Parks set a new freshman record in the 200-yard medley relay, clocking in at 1:48.33.
"As a team, we are doing such a good job of staying excited and motivated as we go through the sessions," said Carlton. "I have loved watching everyone swim their hearts out and can't wait to see what we can do with two more days of racing!"
The evening session was just as good, if not better for the Bulldogs. Overall, 22 swimmers competed across the three individual events and 16 of them improved on their times from the prelims. Carlton was among those who better their times, breaking the 50-yard freestyle record again, setting the new bar at 23.07.
The improvement by the Bulldogs was not limited to the swimming events. Asheville's four divers Jade Canady, Jessica Brock, Madi Alexander, and Megan Almond, all improved their point totals from the morning session. Canady topped all the divers with a team-best point total of 195.30 on Friday.
Following one day of action, Campbell tops the leaderboard with 773 points, with Asheville not far behind with 752 points and host Liberty coming in third with 619 points.
"We are so fortunate to be competing right now," Carlton added. "It is great to see everyone putting safety as a top priority."
The Bulldogs will look to pick up where they left off on Saturday. Action will begin at 10 a.m. with the prelims with the finals to follow at 6 p.m. Saturday's results can be tracked via the Meet Mobile app and the live results link.
