ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville baseball's Brandon Lankford and Blake Brown were listed amongst some of the best in college baseball this week as Perfect Game and D1Baseball released their annual preseason accolades.
Brandon Lankford was listed as the No. 55 hitter in all of college baseball by D1Baseball based on statistical analysis. All hitters were ranked on a scale of 1-100 in three categories: Plate Discipline, Hit Ability and Game Power. Lankford's average score of 82.9 lists him as the second best hitter in the Big South and a Game Power score of 83.2 ranks him as the best power hitter in the Big South.
Lankford was also named to the Big South Preseason First Team All-Conference Team by Perfect Game as the best third baseman in the Big South Conference.
Blake Brown was recognized by Perfect Game as the 14th best senior in college baseball this season.
Lankford closed out the 2019 season hitting .287 with 15 home runs which put him second in the Big South and among the top-40 in the country in home runs. The right-handed hitting third baseman was also eighth in the league in total bases (109) and on-base percentage (.418). The Bulldog clean-up hitter from a year ago was third in the Big South with a .580 slugging percentage.
Last season, Brown struck out 61 batters in only 50 innings pitched. He appeared in 19 games with six starts. A starter for most of his career, Brown proved to be a multi-inning relief weapon after a mid-season move to the bullpen in 2019 as the right-handed pitcher allowed one earned run or less in 13 of his 19 appearances. The senior hurler made 10 relief appearances where he threw multiple innings.
UNC Asheville baseball is set to open their 2020 season with a three-game series versus Samford, February 14-16, in Birmingham, Ala. The Bulldogs will open their home slate, March 7-8, when they host Coppin State at Greenwood Field for a three-game series.
