Bulldogs Fall on the Road to Battle-Tested Western Carolina

09.17.2019 | Women's Volleyball

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – UNC Asheville's volleyball team dropped its match against Western Carolina, 3-0, Tuesday night at the Ramsey Center.

The Bulldogs (5-5) struggled to find a groove in the first two sets, giving the home team a 2-0 advantage going into the third set. The Bulldogs put together a strong showing in the third, but a late-set push by the Catamounts (3-7) put them over the top.

Julia Loveday led the team with six kills in the match, while Cecilia Stack had five. Kasey West finished with 13 digs to lead the Bulldogs and Carter Kennedy finished with eight digs to go along with three assists and three kills.

The Catamounts came into the match having played Appalachian State, Iowa State and NC State the weekend before and won a set against each team.

SET-BY-SET
SET 1, CATAMOUNTS WIN 25-18: Despite four kills from Ansley Rooks in the set, the Bulldogs were unable to overcome a strong second-half surge from the Catamounts in the set. After WCU roared to 6-2 lead, the Bulldogs fought back, eventually taking four-of-five points to narrow the gap to two, 10-8. The Catamounts responded, taking four of the next five points and never allowed the Bulldogs to string more than two points together at a time down the stretch.

SET 2, CATAMOUNTS WIN 25-14: Both teams traded points early, but with the score tied 3-3, WCU ripped off five consecutive points to gain momentum in the set. Kills by Carter Kennedy and Julia Loveday helped to stop the run, but WCU would go on to take six of the next eight points to make it 15-8. With the score 18-12, Anna Skryd helped narrow the gap with a service ace and Kennedy had another dump for a kill, but the Catamounts would close things out for a 2-0 lead.

SET 3, CATAMOUNTS WIN 25-23: Whereas the Catamounts maintained control through much of the first two sets, the third set was nip-and-tuck throughout. The Catamounts maintained the lead through most of the early going, but a 3-0 run tied the score at 10 apiece, capped by back-to-back kills by Peyton McClinton. The Bulldogs held a one-point lead on four different occasions, but could never string together a run. After being tied at 18 apiece, WCU took the next point, leading to a timeout for the Bulldogs. The Catamounts took the next two points out of the break, leading to another timeout. Loveday responded with a kill to make the score 21-19, but the Catamounts would take the set despite two kills from Cecilia Stack and one from Julia Borges down the stretch.
