Julia Borges Named Big South Defensive Player of the Week
09.16.2019 | Women's Volleyball
CHARLOTTE – Senior Julia Borges of UNC Asheville's volleyball team has been selected as the Big South Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Borges was a force on the defensive end as the Bulldogs went 2-1 during the past week, which included a sweep of South Carolina State at home, Tuesday, and a sweep of Southern Miss at the Georgia Southern Invitational, Saturday.
The Rio de Janeiro native combined for 31 digs during the three matches, falling just one dig shy of double-digit digs in all matches with nine against South Carolina State. She did, however, come up with four total blocks against the Lady Bulldogs, including two solo blocks.
Despite falling to tournament host Georgia Southern, Friday, Borges made the Eagles earn their points, recording 10 digs and six total blocks, including two solo blocks.
In Saturday's sweep against the Golden Eagles, Borges finished the match with 12 digs and four block assists – the final one coming on match point that gave the Bulldogs the victory.
Borges also contributed to the offensive attack, finishing the week with 23 kills, three service aces and two assists.
She becomes the first Bulldog to win Big South Defensive Player of the Week since Madisen Zyburt earned that recognition, October 22, 2018, and she's the first to win a weekly award since Cara Guthrie was named Big South Player of the Week in the final week of the regular season in 2018.
Borges and the Bulldogs will return to action in a 6 p.m., Tuesday, contest down the road in Cullowhee against Western Carolina.
