Late Goal Not Enough to Lift Bulldogs in Season Opener

08.30.2019 | Men's Soccer

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Junior forward Tyson Hichman scored a goal in the final three minutes of UNC Asheville's men's soccer match against the United States Naval Academy, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs fell, 3-1, Friday night at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.

Hichman collected a long pass from Dino Dziergas, sprinted down the middle of the field with two defenders around him, and managed to get off a lofted shot over the keeper and into the back of the net to get UNC Asheville on the board.

The Bulldogs (0-1) had other opportunities throughout the night, but were unable to get any of their other seven shots quite on frame. Dziergas had an opportunity in the 59th minute, but his long-range attempt hit off the crossbar.

After Navy (1-0) opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, the Bulldogs thought they'd netted the equalizer in the 38th minute on a brilliant ball from Dziergas into the six-yard box that Kaleem Shabout knocked into the empty net, but the chance was called off because of a Bulldog penalty in the box.

Sophomore Izaiah Vignali had a couple of opportunities sail high: one off a bicycle attempt on a cross in from Dziergas in the first half and one with about five minutes remaining in the second half when he stole the ball in the middle third, dribbled forward and launched a strike from distance that had just a bit too much on it.

The Midshipmen had a potent offensive attack throughout the night, notching their second goal with four minutes left in the second half after a strong run of possession by the Bulldogs. On the night, the Midshipmen recorded 12 shots, nine of which were on goal.

That meant a busy night for freshman goalkeeper Jarrett Payne, who came up with six saves in the contest, including a fantastic save diving to his right in the 25th minute.

"Navy was exactly what we thought they would be: hard-working, physical and very disruptive to what we were trying to do," head coach Mathes Mennell said. "We lost our discipline in some individual moments and they punished us for it.

"Full credit to Navy for a well-executed game plan, but we did ourselves very few favors in the first half. There were some bright spots, though, and we will learn from this and be better for it."

The Bulldogs will open the regular-season portion of their home schedule, 6 p.m., Wednesday, against VMI at Greenwood Soccer Field.
