Bulldogs down Keydets in Home Opener
09.04.2019 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's men's soccer team started its home slate off on the right foot, defeating VMI, 2-1, Wednesday, at Greenwood Soccer Field for its first victory of the season.
Junior forward Tyson Hichman continued to be a force on the offensive end after scoring the Bulldogs' (1-1) lone goal at Navy. In the 10th minute, Hichman collected a pass from Izaiah Vignali in the center of the box and delivered a kick that was knocked in by a VMI (0-2) defender for an own goal.
About 20 minutes later, Hichman put a header on frame on a free kick in from Kyle Adams that forced a save from Keydets goalkeeper Broden Schull. Schull, however, was unable to corral the rebound and Hichman put it in the back of the net to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead at the half.
"I give full credit to my teammates," Hichman said. "They keep finding me in the box and giving me these great looks."
The Bulldogs didn't sit back and look to run out the clock in the second half, instead forcing Schull into four saves in the final 45 minutes. Vignali had the best chance to add a third goal, as his 60th-minute shot ricocheted loudly off the right post. Just a minute later, he put a ball on frame that required one of those saves.
In the 68th minute, Miles Peay's shot from the left side forced a save, and six minutes later, Hichman delivered another strike that Schull had to dive to his left to stop.
VMI would cut the lead in half on a goal from Cooper Duplantis on a free kick from Nadim Lissa in the 75th minute. But, again, the Bulldogs continued to attack, as Hichman had a shot whiz right in front of the goal from the left side in the 77th minute, while Colin Daughtry forced another VMI save just two minutes later.
The defense stood strong in the final 10 minutes. Add in another highlight save from freshman keeper Jarrett Payne in the 52nd minute, and the Bulldogs were able to thwart a more organized second-half offensive attack from VMI.
The Bulldogs return to action in a 6 p.m., Saturday, contest against Georgia State at Greenwood Soccer Field that will also serve as Senior Day with momentum on their side.
"It gives us all the momentum to come in and fight for Greenwood," Hichman said of the victory.
