Carr’s Strong Outing Not Enough as Bulldogs Fall to No. 6 High Point in Opening Round of Big South Championships

05.21.2019 | Baseball

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Redshirt junior Jordan Carr threw a season high eight innings in No. 9 UNC Asheville's loss to No. 6 High Point on Tuesday in the first-round single elimination game of the Big South Championships. The lefty hurler allowed one earned run on six hits with four strikeouts.

Carr held the Panthers (24-25) to two hits and no runs through the first six innings of the game. The Panthers didn't get their first hit of the game until the fourth inning.

Carmine Pagano picked up the first hit of the game for either side with a triple to left center field in the top of the second inning, but could not come across to score. Pagano would be the first of nine Bulldogs to be left stranded during the game.

Chris Troost led off the third inning with a single to right center field. A sacrifice bunt by Andrew Friedholm would move Troost into scoring position. After Greg Gasparro flew out to right field, the Bulldogs looked to be mounting a two out rally with consecutive walks by Dominic Freeberger and Jake Madole to load the bases. High Point starter, Harrison Smith, worked out of the jam with his fourth strike out of the game to keep the game tied.

The Bulldogs (16-36) would put a base runner in scoring position in five of the first seven innings, but could not manage to find the big hit to bring a much needed run across.

Carr worked out of a jam in the fourth with a 6-4 fielder's choice after surrendering the first two hits of the game for the Panthers.

Daniel Millwee led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to left center for High Point's third hit of the game. Carr sent the next two batters down in order with a strikeout and a pop out to Pagano in foul territory. Pinch hitter JJ Woodard singled to right center on a 2-2 pitch to push across the first run of the game and give High Point the 1-0 lead.

The Panthers tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth on a throwing error to give them a 2-0 lead. That score would stick as Grey Lyttle sent the Bulldogs down in order in the top of the ninth to give High Point the first-round victory.

Lyttle entered in relief of Smith in the sixth and allowed two hits in 3.1 innings while striking out five to pick up his sixth win of the season.

The Bulldogs now close the 2019 season with a 16-36 overall record.
