Baseball to Face Off With Gardner-Webb for Final Series of Regular Season

SHELBY, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team is scheduled to close out its regular season this weekend in a neutral site matchup versus Gardner-Webb. The series will be a Thursday-Saturday series on May 16-18 and will take place on Veterans Field at Keeter Stadium.
Game one will take place on Thursday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. while game two is scheduled for Friday, May 17 at 2 p.m. The series will wrap up on Saturday with a 2 p.m. scheduled start time.

About UNC Asheville
UNC Asheville is 15-33 overall in the 2019 season and 8-16 in the Big South Conference.
UNC Asheville is led offensively by the trio of Greg Gasparro, Danny Wilson and Brandon Lankford. Gasparro has been a catalyst all season long from the Bulldog lead-off spot. The junior is currently hitting .328 with 26 runs scored and a .433 on-base percentage. Wilson is hitting .303 and has started all 48 games for the Bulldogs this season.
The senior is leading the Bulldogs with 54 hits, 11 doubles and 46 RBIs. Wilson is currently tied for third place in the Big South Conference in RBIs. Gasparro and Wilson have also both combined for 71 innings pitched from the mound. Lankford leads the Bulldogs with 13 home runs and 96 total bases. The junior third baseman is tied for second in the Big South Conference in home runs and is ninth in total bases.
Jordan Carr leads the Bulldogs on the hill with 63 innings pitched in 13 starts. Freshman Jacob Edwards began the 2019 season as a reliever before working his way into the weekend rotation midseason. The left-handed hurler has now accumulated the second most innings by a Bulldog pitcher with 49.1.
The Bulldog bullpen has been the strength of UNC Asheville's pitching staff this season. Two Bulldog relievers are in the top five in the Big South Conference in appearances. UNC Asheville's all-time leader in the category, Eric Whitecavage, has made 24 appearances while Kole Harris has made 22 appearances out of the bullpen.
Harris is also tied for the top spot in the conference with seven saves and is currently third in games finished with 17. Austin Fahr has proven to be a reliable arm that head coach Scott Friedholm can turn to in high leverage situations. The senior lefty has allowed only eight earned runs in 30.2 innings this season. That gives the senior a team leading 2.35 ERA. Fahr has not allowed an earned run in 18 innings versus Big South Conference opponents.
Former starter turned reliever, Blake Brown, has proven to be a multi-inning threat out of the Bulldog bullpen. The junior has thrown 23 innings out of the pen and only allowed six earned runs. The righty has thrown more than one inning of relief on nine occasions. Brown has held opponents to a .246 batting average against him this season.

Chandler Redmond leads not only the Gardner-Webb team but most of the Big South Conference in several offensive categories. Redmond currently sits atop the conference in home runs (18), RBIs (54), total bases (118) and slugging percentage (686). The senior slugger is hitting .302 and has started in 44 games in the 2019 season. Justin Kunz leads Gardner-Webb with 62 hits and .316 average. Kunz is second to Redmond with 36 RBIs, 10 homers and 107 total bases. Corey Howard leads the Gardner-Webb team with 14 doubles to go along with a .309 batting average and 32 RBIs. As a team, Gardner-Webb is hitting .271 and have scored 280 runs.
Isaac Campbell and Landon Mitchell lead Gardner-Webb on the hill with 71.1 innings pitched each. Campbell has a 3-4 record and a 4.54 ERA while Mitchell is 7-4 on the season with a 3.91 ERA. Jarrett Thompson has made 22 appearances out of the Gardner-Webb bullpen and has thrown 33.2 innings. The right-handed reliever has a 3.74 ERA and is tied for the Big South Conference lead with seven saves.
