Game Notes

BOONE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will hit the road for a midweek game versus mountain rival Appalachian State on Tuesday, May 14. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Smith Stadium.

BULLDOG BITES

Last Six Matchups
Prior to this season, the Bulldogs held a 3-2 advantage over the Mountaineers since head coach Scott Friedholm took control of the Bulldogs prior to the 2015 season. The Mountaineers got the best of the Bulldogs earlier in the 2019 season to even the series in the Scott Friedholm era at three games apiece. A win in Tuesday's matchup would guarantee the Bulldogs a 4-3 advantage over their mountain rival in the two programs' last seven matchups.

About the Bulldogs
UNC Asheville is 14-33 overall in the 2019 season. The Bulldogs are hitting a combined .234 on the season with 222 runs scored.

The Bulldogs are led offensively by the trio of Greg Gasparro, Danny Wilson and Brandon Lankford. Gasparro has been a catalyst all season long from the Bulldog lead-off spot. The junior is currently hitting .317 with 23 runs scored and a .424 on-base percentage. Wilson is hitting .310 and has started all 47 games for the Bulldogs this season. The senior is leading the Bulldogs with 54 hits, 11 doubles and 45 RBIs. Wilson is currently tied for third place in the Big South Conference in RBIs. Gasparro and Wilson have also both combined for 66 innings pitched from the mound. Lankford leads the Bulldogs with 13 home runs and 95 total bases. The junior third baseman is tied for second in the Big South Conference in home runs and is ninth in total bases.

Jordan Carr leads the Bulldogs on the hill with 63 innings pitched in 13 starts. Freshman Jacob Edwards began the 2019 season as a reliever before working his way into the weekend rotation midseason. The left-handed hurler has now accumulated the second most innings by a Bulldog pitcher with 48.1.

The Bulldog bullpen has been the strength of UNC Asheville's pitching staff this season. Two Bulldog relievers are in the top five in the Big South Conference in appearances. UNC Asheville's all-time leader in the category, Eric Whitecavage, has made 24 appearances while Kole Harris has made 22 appearances out of the bullpen.

Harris is also tied for the top spot in the conference with seven saves and is currently third in games finished with 17. Austin Fahr has proven to be a reliable arm that head coach Scott Friedholm can turn to in high leverage situations. The senior lefty has allowed only eight earned runs in 30.2 innings this season. That gives the senior a team leading 2.35 ERA. Fahr has not allowed an earned run in 18 innings versus Big South Conference opponents. Former starter turned reliever, Blake Brown, has proven to be a multi-inning threat out of the Bulldog bullpen. The junior has thrown 23 innings out of the pen and only allowed six earned runs. The righty has thrown more than one inning of relief on nine occasions. Brown has held opponents to a .246 batting average against him this season and that total is good enough for 10th place in the Big South Conference.

About the Mountaineers
Appalachian State is 21-27 overall in the 2019 season. The Mountaineers are 13-13 on their home field this season.

Luke Drumheller leads the Mountaineer offense with a .347 batting average, 61 hits, 14 doubles and 35 RBIs. Kendall McGowan is hitting .311 on the season with 52 hits. The sophomore outfielder leads the Mountaineers with 89 total bases and is tied for the lead with seven home runs. McGowan's 33 RBIs is only two behind Drumheller's team leading total. Joel McDaniel also has seven home runs this season and leads the team with a .534 slugging percentage. Altogether the Mountaineer offense is hitting .263 with 422 hits and 257 RBIs.

On the hill, Tyler Tuthill has started 13 games and pitched to a 3.53 ERA in 71.1 innings. The freshman lefty has allowed 28 earned runs and struck out 51 batters. Brandon Boone has a 5-3 record in eleven starts and has allowed 26 earned runs in 55.1 innings. Kaleb Bowman and Andrew Papp have each been a force coming out of the bullpen. The duo has combined for 50 appearances and 10 saves this season. Bowman has a 5-1 record with a 3.25 ERA in 52.2 innings pitched. Papp has thrown 38.1 innings with a 3.05 ERA in his 25 appearances. Papp has averaged more than a strikeout an inning in the 2019 season.
