Madole Finishes With Two Hits in Bulldog Loss to High Point on Sunday

04.28.2019 | Baseball

HIGH POINT, N.C. – UNC Asheville scored the first four runs of the game, but High Point was able to pull away in the final innings of the game for a 9-4 win over the Bulldogs on Sunday, April 28, at Williard Stadium.

The Bulldogs (14-28, 8-12 Big South) plated the first four runs of the game in the top of the third to take an early 4-0 advantage. Wade Chandler got things going in the inning when he collected a bunt single. Carmine Pagano then also acquired a bunt single to give the Bulldogs runners at first and second with no outs. The bases were then loaded with no outs when Dominic Freeberger singled through the left side.

Pagano and Chandler were brought home shortly thereafter by a Jake Madole ground-rule double that garnered the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Danny Wilson then singled in Freeberger to make it 3-0. Madole, who had been moved over to third on the Wilson single, was then brought home by a Chris Troost sacrifice fly that made it 4-0.

In total, the Bulldogs had five hits and collected four runs in the top of the third inning.

The four-run Bulldog lead would not last long though with the Panthers (19-19, 12-8 Big South) matching in the bottom half of the frame with four runs of their own to tie things up at 4-all.

The Panthers would score the final five runs of the game with a single run in the bottom of the seventh and four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Madole led the Bulldogs in the game with two hits. He was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Joe Johnson led High Point with three hits.

Grey Lyttle earned the win in relief for High Point. He pitched the final four innings.

UNC Asheville's Blake Brown suffered the loss. He was one of five Bulldog pitchers used in the game.

The three-game series between UNC Asheville and High Point will close with a 3 p.m. first pitch on Monday, April 29, at Williard Stadium.
